Can one “mistake” change art history forever? (Maria Martinez)

Posted on 28 Jan at 9:36 am
Maria Martinez (1887-1980)

Meet Maria Martinez—a legendary potter from the Pueblo tribe in New Mexico.

Known for her famous black-on-black pottery, Maria turned a “mistake” into an artistic masterpiece.

When her pots accidentally turned completely black during firing, she and her husband Julian discovered a unique, glossy technique that made them famous.

Why does Maria’s work stand out?

  • Every piece tells a story, inspired by nature and Pueblo culture.
  • She blended traditional Pueblo techniques with innovative artistry.
  • Her black-on-black designs were groundbreaking and are now celebrated worldwide.
Students created pottery masterpieces after learning about Maria Martinez.

What can your students learn from Maria?

  • Coiling, polishing, and the art of creating perfect shapes.
  • The ingenuity of the Pueblo people and their connection to nature.
  • How to embrace “happy accidents” and turn mistakes into masterpieces.

Here’s how easy it is to bring Maria’s techniques to your classroom:

  1. Use step-by-step lessons to teach students her methods.
  2. Bring the lessons to life as students create their own clay pots, complete with vibrant Pueblo-inspired patterns.
  3. Display finished pots to showcase their newfound skills and confidence.

Want some inspiration?

Check out what other students have created after learning about Maria Martinez.

Turn your classroom into a pottery studio, and let your students explore the magic of Pueblo art.

Let’s keep the tradition alive!

Creatively yours,

Everyone Loves MTM!

I tell my students each week they are getting more art history this year than many students get in university. I love hearing them learn and use words like post Impressionism, realism and complimentary color palette in conversation.

So far, the Georges Seurat pointillism project using sand paper has been the most popular!
