Parents form group to fight for art education

Posted on November 13, 2010

Parents fighting to get more art education into the public schools have a new organization โ€” the Milton Visual Arts Alliance โ€” and plan to make their case before the School Committee again this week.

The groupโ€™s logo features Leonardo da Vinciโ€™s โ€œMona Lisaโ€ with the word โ€œrestoreโ€ printed across her face.

โ€œArt matters in Milton!โ€ the group says in its mission statement. โ€œWe are passionate parents and Milton residents who are concerned about the state of visual arts education in Milton Public Schools.

โ€œOur mission is to increase the role of visual arts education in our schools to keep children healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.โ€

Earlier this month, parents and students flooded a School Committee meeting to protest the limited amount of art classes offered in the elementary schools.

Everyone Loves MTM!

Working as a volunteer with the Meet the Masters program at my sonโ€™s school this past year has been such a great experience. I believe art programs help children build confidence and instill a sense of wonder and curiosity that helps foster creativity. Meet the Masters is so wonderful because it gives young children a taste of art fundamentals while teaching them about the many styles and techniques of artists from around the world and from different time periods. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing each child in my sonโ€™s first grade class create their own unique masterpiece!
