Parents form group to fight for art education

Posted on November 13, 2010

Parents fighting to get more art education into the public schools have a new organization — the Milton Visual Arts Alliance — and plan to make their case before the School Committee again this week.

The group’s logo features Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” with the word “restore” printed across her face.

“Art matters in Milton!” the group says in its mission statement. “We are passionate parents and Milton residents who are concerned about the state of visual arts education in Milton Public Schools.

“Our mission is to increase the role of visual arts education in our schools to keep children healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged.”

Earlier this month, parents and students flooded a School Committee meeting to protest the limited amount of art classes offered in the elementary schools.

Everyone Loves MTM!

As an artist and educator for over 40 years, I have always prided myself on doing what is right for students. Having the resources that not only teach skills, but the standards and the art history connected to those skills is monumental.

Meet the Masters gives teachers and the students the language to articulate what the work is and what it means. MTM provides the curriculum and the tools to take art education to a different level. In today’s world, art is a means to connect culture, education, and who we are as a people.

Who better to learn from, than the Masters?
