Moms paint mural at playground

Posted on October 28, 2010

MISSION VIEJO – Three local moms have taken their children’s playground from drab to “fab.”

The women, a group of parents at Del Lago Elementary, convinced the school principal to give the campus’ grey brick handball court a makeover, using San Clemente artist Drew Brophy’s work “Local Surfers” as inspiration.

The painting features two dolphins catching a vibrant blue wave while a glowing orange sun shines above them.

Work started on Monday, and the women hope to wrap it up within a week, said Courtney Arlow, who came up with the project.

“There’s no art program anymore. Any art programs the kids get are sponsored by the PTA, or put into lesson plans,” she said. “We just want to bring art into their lives and inspire them.”

Everyone Loves MTM!

I love MTM because it provides our kids with otherwise unavailable or limited art exposure. It gives them a chance to create and be inspired by amazing artists from different times in history, as well as within different mediums. Being a coordinator for MTM allows me the privilege of providing inspiration and creativity to kids just starting out on their educational journey- they never cease to amaze me with what they are able to express!
