During an interactive presentation, Meet the Masters elementary school students are introduced to Rembrandt van Rijn and his life in 17th century Holland. They learn about his strong yet sympathetic personality and how it influenced his art throughout his life; from his 90+ self-portraits to painting others and developing his unique painting style using light and dark unlike any other. They learn that it’s known as “Rembrandt Lighting.” With the aid of a flashlight to define dramatic lighting, the children participate in an activity where they see and understand highlights and shadow. Rembrandt’s special technique of painting these contrasts carries over to their own artwork as they create windmills in the foreground of a Dutch landscape.
