Why Rockwell is still America’s favorite illustrator

Posted on July 30, 2025

Norman Rockwell Art Projects

Norman Rockwell didn’t paint superheroes or abstract shapes.

He painted us.

Families, dogs, dentists, dinner tables, and missing teeth.

Everyday moments that felt like a snapshot of America.

That’s why he’s one of our 35 master artists.

Rockwell was more than a painter—he was a storyteller. Over 300 magazine covers. Millions of readers. One unforgettable style.

And now your students get to follow in his footsteps.

Just like Rockwell, MTM students create their own cover and layout for “The Saturday Evening Post”.

They’ll learn how to:

  • Use layout and lettering like a real magazine illustrator
  • Add tiny details that make a scene feel alive
  • Create mood through color and design
  • Tell stories with oil pastels—not just words

Rockwell’s secret?

Details.

He hid treasures in every scene—so we train students to look closer.

They’ll play “I Spy” with a master. Then become one.

Every grade level gets a custom project. And each one turns your students into cover artists.

They’ll design their own version of The Saturday Evening Post using:

  • Oil pastels (no crayons here!)
  • A variety of paper to layer like pros
  • Circle stencils for bold, centered compositions
  • Lettering techniques used by real illustrators

And here’s how to bring Rockwell into your classroom:

  • Use our learning packets before the art day
  • Let volunteers guide the project with step-by-step help
  • Run it yourself or invite one of our expert instructors
  • Match the activity to the season—or the mood you want to spark

Already using Rockwell? Revisit him with a new group. Haven’t added him yet? He’s a great standalone or bundle addition.

Every school can bring him to life—whether you’re in SoCal or beyond.

Want proof?

Visit the Student Gallery now.

You’ll see Rockwell’s spirit in every smile, every page, every pastel.

Creatively yours,

Meet the Masters

Everyone Loves MTM!

Meet the masters continues to be one of the most successful programs at our school, with the largest consistent group of parent volunteers. Our students recognize art by “the masters” when they see it around town or on family trips. Students that call themselves “bad at art” have been delighted when they see the beautiful art they can create. Thank you for all you do to make this curriculum glow and shine. We love it and are so thrilled to continue to use it at our school!
