Meet the artist who invented the mobile.

Posted on June 27, 2024

This month, we’re thrilled to introduce you to Alexander Calder.

He revolutionized art with his playful mobiles and sculptures.

But Calder was more than just an artist.

He transformed how we perceive sculpture by adding motion and whimsy to a traditionally static form. Calder started as an engineer, which profoundly influenced his artistic style.

His background gave him a unique perspective that allowed him to create balanced and intricate mobiles and stabiles that seem to defy gravity.

Here’s why Calder is one of our 35 masters:

  • His innovative use of movement in sculpture.
  • His meticulous balance of forms and shapes.
  • The playful and whimsical nature of his mobiles.

Your students will be fascinated by Calder’s approach to art. They’ll learn about balance, motion, and abstract forms, and it’ll inspire them to think outside the box.

In short, here’s what Calder can teach:

  • The importance of engineering principles in art.
  • How to create dynamic and balanced compositions.
  • How to use simple materials to create complex designs.

These lessons help students see art as an evolving, living thing – just like Calder’s mobiles.

But there’s more…

Students loved creating their Alexander Calder mobile masterpieces.

Here’s what else your students will gain from studying Calder:

  • The joy of creating interactive and dynamic art.
  • Improved problem-solving and engineering skills.
  • An understanding of the intersection between art and science.

Our guides and videos will bring Calder’s innovative spirit into your classroom.

Here’s how you can integrate Calder into your art curriculum:

  • Start with our multimedia assembly: Introduce Calder through engaging history-filled slides to capture your students’ attention and set the stage for creativity.
  • Work on technique packets: These self-guided packets will help students understand Calder’s methods and prepare them for their art projects.
  • Create stunning art projects: Turn your classroom into an art studio where students can create mobiles and stabiles with Calder’s techniques.

By studying Alexander Calder, your students will not only learn about art. They’ll also develop a deeper appreciation for creativity and innovation.

Check out our Calder student gallery to see what’s possible.

Creatively yours,

Everyone Loves MTM!

The Meet the Masters art camp in Uganda was a great success! MTM was a highlight for the children, and it made it very simple and straightforward to teach. Thanks isn’t enough…the children and adults loved learning about the color wheel, art history, seeing famous pieces of art – plus, making their own masterpieces. I saw many children moved in new ways because of the art they experienced through the curriculum.
