What’s the secret behind The Starry Night? (Van Gogh)

Posted on Today at 9:00 am

Art Lessons for Vincent Van Gogh

The master of movement, emotion, and vibrant, unforgettable color was, without a doubt, Vincent van Gogh.

He didn’t paint what he saw but how he felt.

Van Gogh struggled through rejection and poverty. But he never stopped creating. Today, his work is loved around the world.

That’s why he’s one of our 35 Master Artists.

His style is instantly recognizable. His story, deeply human. And his art? A gateway into expression, resilience, and color theory.

Students connect with him on every level.

Student Artwork
MTM students recreate their own oil pastel masterpieces of The Starry Night.

In our van Gogh unit, your students will:

  • Explore how line, texture, and color express emotion
  • Learn about rhythm and movement in brushwork
  • Study the story behind The Starry Night and Sunflowers
  • Discover why van Gogh’s style was rejected in his lifetime
  • Practice letting go of perfection and painting what they feel

Then they’ll create their own bold oil pastel landscape on construction paper—layering color and movement with van Gogh-inspired energy.

It’s expressive. Messy (in the best way). And full of feeling.

And teaching it is simple.

  • Step-by-step scripts walk you through every part
  • No art experience needed
  • Project levels available from K through 8+
  • Visual aids and warmups included
  • Art supplies available or easily sourced

Van Gogh isn’t just another artist.

He’s a reminder to keep creating, even when it’s hard.

And he teaches students that their unique voice is worth putting on paper.

Whether you’ve taught this unit before or you’re just getting started, van Gogh is always worth revisiting.

Everyone Loves MTM!

On behalf of all the teachers and students of dePortola Elementary School, I’d like to commend you for providing an outstanding first year of Meet the Masters for our school. The quality of your program is excellent. The teachers felt their students truly learned to recognize the works and styles of the great masters that they were introduced to. We appreciated the variety of classroom art projects presented.

Our lecturer was well liked by teachers and students. She is professional and responsive to each age group of students. I also found her to be excellent as our coordinator and workshop presenter. We felt very fortunate that she was with us.

Our principal has also been enthusiastic and supportive of the Meet the Masters program. We both will always be pleased to recommend your program to other elementary schools.
