MTM meets our requirements because itβs standards-aligned and extremely engaging for students. Our school is located on Camp Pendleton base, and we serve military families who often join or leave during the school year. Weβre always excited to welcome new students but sad when families have to leave to serve our country. Meet the Masters gives these students a consistent, high-quality art education no matter when they arrive. Students are really enjoying learning about each artist and how their life story shaped them to become a master.

Oceanside School District

At a Glance
Oceanside Unified serves approximately 15,500 students across 22 schools. Schools on Camp Pendleton base serve military families with high student mobility rates as families relocate for service. The district needed a standards-aligned art curriculum that would work across grade levels and provide consistency for students who frequently transfer between schools.

Before Meet the Masters
Administration wanted to make art the focus of their Enrichment class curriculum.
They needed something that complemented their existing Art Flex Pro curriculum, which caters to higher grade levels.
The district required a program that was standards-aligned, engaging across all elementary grades, and comprehensive enough to serve as the foundation for formal art instruction in a unique school setting serving military families.
What They Received
Meet the Masters provided Oceanside Unified with standards-based lessons that work across all elementary grades. The program includes comprehensive art history components that students find surprisingly engaging. Teachers use MTM as the foundation of their Enrichment curriculum, sometimes incorporating Art Flex Pro resources to extend learning or reteach concepts. The supplemental practice pages and pre-lesson materials integrate seamlessly with the core MTM curriculum.
Benefits of Meet the Masters
Students Love the Art History Component
Teachers expected students to enjoy creating art but were pleasantly surprised by how much students love learning about each artist’s life story. Students record information in supplemental packets and genuinely engage with how historical context shaped these master artists.
First-Ever School Art Show Creates Excitement
The school’s inaugural Enrichment Class Art Show features mostly MTM artwork. Students take noticeably more pride and effort in their creations knowing their work will be displayed publicly for the community to enjoy in May.
Students Remember Artists and Techniques Long-Term
Fourth graders talk about the artists they learned about months after lessons conclude. They remember Picasso’s cubism, Van Gogh’s swirling brushstrokes, and Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits, proving the learning truly stuck beyond the immediate lesson.
Would They Recommend Meet the Masters?
“Yes, I would recommend it to the district because of the feedback I’ve received from students. Students also like making connections to last year’s curriculum that focused on the elements of art. Students generally enjoy the lessons, though they would like to learn about more artists categorized as minorities or women.”
