What makes Winslow Homer’s ocean views so unforgettable?

Posted on November 14, 2024

Set sail across the vast oceans with Winslow Homer!

If you’ve ever been captivated by the power of the sea, you’re in for a treat. Homer’s paintings breathe life into crashing waves and quiet shores, and turn nature’s moods into masterpieces.

But he didn’t start out that way.

Homer began his career as an illustrator, sketching Civil War scenes for newspapers. It wasn’t until later that he turned to painting – and that’s when his love for the ocean truly emerged.

His work became a vivid tribute to nature by capturing the raw beauty of the American coastline.

So, why is Homer one of our 35 masters?

  • His incredible use of light and shadow, known as value, to create depth.
  • His ability to capture movement and stillness in nature.
  • His dedication to painting life as he saw it—no filters, just raw and real.

With Homer, your students will learn the art of capturing nature’s drama.

Winslow Homer Art Lesson

They’ll learn to use light and shadow to create a sense of depth, just like he did. They’ll see how different values of color can change the mood of a scene to make it come alive.

In short, Homer’s lessons will teach your students:

  • How to play with light and shadow to show depth.
  • The importance of observation in capturing nature’s details.
  • How to express motion and stillness through their brushstrokes.

In the classroom, this means hands-on learning that’s as engaging as it is educational.

Our lesson plans include creating Homer-style seascapes by using techniques that focus on value – playing with light and dark to make waves look like they’re rolling right off the page.

Let’s bring the power and beauty of the sea to your classroom!

Creatively yours,

Meet the Masters

Everyone Loves MTM!

As a volunteer for my son’s school, Peace with Christ Christian School, in Aurora, Colorado, I recommended the Meet the Masters program to the art teacher and to the principal. One track was purchased the next year and another track was purchased the subsequent year. Volunteers moved between classrooms presenting artists to children who were excited and enthusiastic about learning the Masters of art.  The curriculum presented the artist biography, broke down art techniques into manageable pieces, and enhanced the students artistic skills.

Wishing you many years of continued success in bringing art and Meet the Masters to children, of all ages.
