SAN DIEGO: CITY COUNCIL OKS 5% ARTS FUNDING INCREASE

Posted on July 25, 2012

SAN DIEGO โ€” Those arts-impact reports are paying off.

In the wake of a recent study by the Americans for the Arts showing the โ€œnonprofit arts and culture industryโ€ in the City of San Diego generated $579 million in annual economic activity and supported 17,817 jobs, the San Diego City Council this week approved Mayor Jerry Sandersโ€™ recommendation to increase the cityโ€™s allocation to the arts by 5 percent.

That represents a roughly half-million dollar addition to the budget of the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, from $7,297,983 (last year) to $7,742,108.

โ€œWe know that nonprofit arts and culture organizations have a significant impact on our communities, businesses, families, visitors and our economic future,โ€ Sanders said in a prepared statement. โ€œOur city is well served by our nonprofit art and cultural organizations. They enhance our quality of life, attract visitors, create jobs and attract skilled workers, enhance our communities and help educate our children.โ€

Everyone Loves MTM!

I love MTM because it provides our kids with otherwise unavailable or limited art exposure. It gives them a chance to create and be inspired by amazing artists from different times in history, as well as within different mediums. Being a coordinator for MTM allows me the privilege of providing inspiration and creativity to kids just starting out on their educational journey- they never cease to amaze me with what they are able to express!
