Real artists don’t follow the rules—just ask Miró

Posted on 9 Apr at 9:00 am

Joan Miró Art Projects

Joan Miró was a Spanish artist who turned dreams into art.

His paintings are full of playful shapes, bright colors, and floating lines… and it created a world that feels like a dream.

Miró didn’t just paint what he saw – he painted what he imagined.

He believed in breaking the rules – and by breaking them, he turned ordinary objects into something magical, and let his creativity run wild.

Why is Miró’s art so unique?

  • He painted like a child—fearless, bold, and full of imagination.
  • He used abstract shapes and surreal ideas to tell stories.
  • His art feels like stepping into a dream, where anything is possible.

What will your students learn from Miró?

  • How to create surreal, dreamlike art with bold colors and squiggles.
  • How shapes and lines can make a picture feel alive.
  • The power of imagination—there’s no wrong way to create like Miró!
Joan Miro Art For Kids
Students created their own colorful and abstract masterpiece after learning techniques from Joan Miró.

Here’s how to bring Miró’s magic into your classroom:

  • Have students cut out colorful abstract shapes and arrange them into playful designs.
  • Let them draw a giant squiggle first, then turn it into something unexpected.
  • Use markers, paper cutouts, and even powdered tempera paint to create movement and texture.

This lesson is a favorite for all ages. It’s messy, fun, and wildly creative. And no two pieces ever turn out the same!

Want to see what students have created after learning about Miró?

Check out their incredible work in the Student Gallery.

Let’s bring art to life!

Creatively yours,

Everyone Loves MTM!

As a volunteer for my son’s school, Peace with Christ Christian School, in Aurora, Colorado, I recommended the Meet the Masters program to the art teacher and to the principal. One track was purchased the next year and another track was purchased the subsequent year. Volunteers moved between classrooms presenting artists to children who were excited and enthusiastic about learning the Masters of art.  The curriculum presented the artist biography, broke down art techniques into manageable pieces, and enhanced the students artistic skills.

Wishing you many years of continued success in bringing art and Meet the Masters to children, of all ages.
