Discover Escher’s World of Mind-Bending Puzzles

Posted on October 2, 2024

Have you ever seen art make the impossible seem real?

That’s what M.C. Escher did with his incredible creations, by turning everyday shapes into puzzles.

Born in the Netherlands in 1898, Maurits Cornelis Escher explored tessellations. These are patterns that fit together perfectly, like puzzle pieces.

Why is Escher one of our 35 masters?

His art blends math and creativity. He makes abstract concepts beautiful. His work plays with perception, which leaves viewers both amazed and curious.

M.C. Escher – Patterns and Tessellations

Your students will love learning about Escher because:

  • He makes tessellations fun and easy to understand.
  • His work inspires creativity and problem-solving.
  • They’ll explore art as a puzzle to unlock – kids love puzzles!

Here’s what students specifically can learn from Escher:

  • How to create shapes that fit together perfectly.
  • The magic of tessellations and their patterns.
  • How to draw with mathematical precision and detail.

Escher’s lessons blend math with art. They help students think in new ways.

Want to bring Escher to your classroom?

  1. Start with our multimedia assembly. Introduce Escher through slides and music. Your students will be captivated by his amazing work.
  2. Try our technique packets. These help students practice Escher’s methods. They will learn the basics of tessellation and get ready for their projects.
  3. Let students create. Turn your classroom into an art studio. They’ll experiment with Escher’s techniques and make their own tessellations.

By studying Escher, students will grow artistically and mathematically. They’ll see how art connects to the patterns around us.

Be sure to check out our student gallery to see what your students can achieve.

Creatively yours,

Everyone Loves MTM!

Meet the masters continues to be one of the most successful programs at our school, with the largest consistent group of parent volunteers. Our students recognize art by “the masters” when they see it around town or on family trips. Students that call themselves “bad at art” have been delighted when they see the beautiful art they can create. Thank you for all you do to make this curriculum glow and shine. We love it and are so thrilled to continue to use it at our school!
