About Henri Matisse (1869-1954)

Henri Matisse was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker who was one of the leading artists of the Fauvist movement. He was known for his use of bright, bold colors and his ability to convey emotion through his use of line and form. Matisse's works often feature fluid, organic shapes and a strong sense of movement. He was a master of the color cutout, using brightly colored paper to create vibrant compositions.

In addition to his paintings, Matisse was also known for his sculptures, drawings, and lithographs. Throughout his long career, he continually experimented with new techniques and styles, and he is considered to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century. His work continues to be celebrated and admired by art lovers and collectors around the world.

Henri Matisse Art Lesson & Art Activity

Students will discover the abstract art of French artist Henri Matisse. His bold use of color and shape in his paper cutouts expose the children to a new medium and style of art. In their classrooms, the children create masterpiece cutouts of their own using a sea motif. Be sure to click through the student masterpieces at the top of this page.
